Position Summary
The Logistics Superintendent is responsible for leading and coordinating all logistics and support operations for the Oko West Project. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and reliable movement of personnel, equipment, fuel, and materials between Georgetown and the site.
The position blends strategic logistics planning with hands-on operational leadership, overseeing transport assets, wharf operations, and camp infrastructure supporting approximately 50 personnel. A core objective of this role is the development of local capability, including mentoring a Guyanese General Foreman (GF) to transition into the Superintendent role within two to three years, supporting long-term operational sustainability.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Logistics Management
- Develop and maintain an integrated logistics plan aligned with construction, procurement, and production schedules.
- Plan, schedule, and oversee transport of materials, fuel, and equipment from Georgetown to the wharf and onward to site.
- Coordinate closely with Supply Chain, Operations, and Maintenance teams to optimize fleet utilization and resource deployment.
- Establish contingency and emergency logistics plans to mitigate risks related to weather, access, or supply disruptions.
Wharf & Camp Infrastructure Management
- Manage wharf operations and associated infrastructure, including accommodations, catering, power, and utilities for up to 50 personnel.
- Oversee water treatment, sewage systems, waste management, catering, and camp maintenance in compliance with all health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Implement preventive maintenance programs for facilities and utilities.
- Coordinate site security and access control in collaboration with the Security Department.
Personnel & Cargo Transport
- Coordinate personnel rotations and cargo movements between Georgetown, the wharf, and the mine site.
- Ensure safe, compliant, and fully documented transport via boats, barges, trucks, and support vehicles.
- Optimize cargo consolidation, scheduling, and backhauling to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
Fleet & Equipment Management
- Supervise operation and maintenance of transport assets including horse and trailer fleet, cranes, tug and barge systems, crew boats, and light vehicles.
- Collaborate with the Maintenance Superintendent on preventive maintenance schedules, fuel consumption tracking, and spare parts inventory.
- Ensure driver/operator competency, licensing, and strict adherence to company safety standards.
Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
- Enforce company policies, Guyanese regulations, and international standards, including the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMC).
- Conduct risk assessments, safety audits, and emergency response drills.
- Ensure compliance with environmental discharge, waste handling, and hazardous material transport requirements.
Leadership & Local Capacity Building
- Lead, coach, and develop logistics, transport, and camp personnel across all operating locations.
- Actively mentor a local Guyanese General Foreman to progress into the Logistics Superintendent role within 2–3 years.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Cost Control & Performance Management
- Develop and manage annual logistics and camp operating budgets.
- Monitor, analyze, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs), including:
- Cost per tonne-kilometer
- Barge utilization rate
- Fuel efficiency
- Equipment availability
- Wharf uptime and camp reliability
- Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives and process improvement opportunities.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Operations, or a related discipline.
- Training in Facilities Management, Camp Operations, or Engineering is considered an asset.
Experience:
- Minimum 10 years of experience in logistics and transport operations, including at least 5 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Strong background in river and barge transport operations, preferably in mining, oil & gas, or heavy industrial environments.
- Proven experience managing camp or wharf infrastructure, utilities, and accommodations.
- Experience working in remote, tropical, or developing-country environments strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with the International Cyanide Management Code and hazardous materials transport regulations.
- Demonstrated success mentoring and developing local and multicultural teams.
Skills:
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in logistics tracking, fleet management, and reporting systems.
- Solid understanding of preventive maintenance and facility operations.
- Financial and budget management capability.
- Adaptability and resilience in remote-site and multicultural work environments.
