Job Description – Railway Product Design Engineer
Position Overview
The Railway Product Design Engineer will be responsible for the end‑to‑end design and development of railway part layouts, interiors, structural envelopes, and manufacturing documentation. The role requires strong expertise in 2D/3D design, DFM principles, raw material standards, and compliance with RDSO, UIC, and EN norms. The engineer will collaborate with cross‑functional teams including manufacturing, quality, procurement, and customer engineering.
Key Responsibilities
1. Coach Layout & Interior Design
Develop complete coach layouts for LHB, EMU/MEMU, Metro, Sleeper, and Chair Car configurations.
Design interior systems including seating, partitions, lavatories, luggage racks, cab interiors, and passenger amenities.
Ensure compliance with ergonomics, safety, accessibility, and fire‑safety standards (EN 45545, RDSO norms).
2. Gauge & Structural Envelope Engineering
Design in accordance with BG/MG/SG gauge requirements and clearance profiles.
Prepare kinematic and static envelope studies for integration of interior and exterior components.
Coordinate with bogie, underframe, and roof‑mounted equipment teams for interface management.
3. 2D Drawing Creation & Engineering Documentation
Create detailed 2D manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, and welding drawings with GD&T.
Generate BOMs, revision control, and engineering change documentation.
Prepare technical documents including FAI reports, compliance documents, and design justification notes.
4. Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
Optimize designs for sheet‑metal fabrication, CNC machining, welding, extrusion, and casting processes.
Ensure manufacturability within standard tolerances and available production capabilities.
Work closely with production teams to resolve manufacturability issues and reduce cost/lead time.
5. Raw Material Standards & Compliance
Apply knowledge of railway‑grade materials including stainless steels, aluminium alloys, structural steels, and FR materials.
Interpret and apply RDSO, IS, EN, and UIC material standards.
Ensure correct selection of materials, coatings, and corrosion‑resistant finishes.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Diploma / B.E. / B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or related field.
5+ years of experience in railway coach design or rolling‑stock engineering.
Strong proficiency in CAD tools (SolidWorks / CATIA / Creo / AutoCAD).
Knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack‑up, and manufacturing processes.
Understanding of railway standards (RDSO, UIC, EN 12663, EN 45545).
Strong documentation and technical writing skills.
Preferred Skills
Experience with FEA, crashworthiness, or structural validation.
Exposure to PPAP, DFMEA, PFMEA, or similar quality frameworks.
Experience working with OEMs, Tier‑1 suppliers, or railway coach factories.
Soft Skills
Strong analytical and problem‑solving ability.
Good communication and cross‑functional collaboration.
Ability to manage multiple design tasks and meet project timelines.
